Yesrerday I was reading a Twitter report from Iran that Rafsanjani-head of Iran's Assembly of Experts-was in the holy city of Qom conferring with the Ayatollah Sistani-the greatest and grandest of all Ayatollah's in the world of Shiite Islam-about the post-election chaos in Iran. Sistani an Iranian born citizen of Iraq, and a voice of moderation in that country, is a long time opponent of Ayatollah Khomeine and Iran's Shiite theocracy. According to Sistani's interpretation of Islamic law Moslem clerics are absolutely and strictly forbidden to hold political office of any kind-not that he believes in the separation of church and state-civil society, according to Sistani, should be governed by Islamic law-but in the separation of Moslem clerics like himself from political power*.
*Clerics are only allowed to intervene in state affairs when Islam is in peril.
In other words, Iran is in gross violation of Sistani's understanding of Islam. For Iran's Supreme Leader (ruler, dictator or king), is also a cleric (an Ayatollah) with absolute religious authority on all matters relating to the Moslem faith. As pointed out by many writers Iran's theocracy is a complete innovation unprecedented in Islamic history, a revolution which Sistani condemns as heresy. But Sistani and these writers aren't entirely correct. Iran's theocracy does have a precedent, the precedent of Islam's founder, the Prophet Mohammed: Mohammed was both King (Supreme Leader) and Prophet to his people with absolute power in the realms of politics and faith. It would appear that Ayatollah Khomeine modeled the office of Supreme Leader on the Prophet and that he envisioned himself as Mohammed's true successor and near equal.
With good reason Khamenie is regarded by followers as infallible on matters of religion and politics, with good reason he is seen as the savior of Islam from powerlessness and decline. Like the Prophet God speaks directly to Khamenie directing and guiding his every word and deed. In short, Khamenie is the Prophet's holy incarnation combining in his person supreme political and religious authority destined by God to restore the faith to its former glory; destined to reverse Islam's miserable decline and turn it into a political and military superpower aiming at world domination.
Khamenie is no Mikhail Gorbachev with doubts about his revolutionary ideology ready to comprise his faith and foreign policy goals with infidels like America and initiate significant domestic reforms. Khamenie is a true believer, for him his goals are set in stone: the Islamic Republic of Iran is the perfect model for a just, peaceful and prosperous world order and his aim is to impose this model on everyone. Today Iran tomorrow the world! Khamenie is Hitler wearing a turban and robe committed unto death to the universal triumph of Islam. And now this genocidal regime and uncompromising leader are about to get the bomb. Imagine Hitler with nuclear arms and be very, very alarmed.
