If we are unwilling to stay in Afghanistan for decades with a massive military presence and determined to win, which Obama and the American people seem unwilling to do, then it's best that we leave that country soon as the Taliban will out wait us in the end as did our victorious communist enemies in Vietnam. As the Taliban say "The West owns the clocks but we own the time," and they are right (
see).
Another ominous sign that Obama is walking in the shadow of LBJ's disastrous policies in Vietnam (in both Iraq and Afghanistan) is his upcoming announcement at West Point on Tuesday on the escalation of troops in Afghanistan. For Obama's announcement will be falling on the 45th anniversary* of LBJ's fateful White House meeting with Dean Rusk, McGeorge Bundy and Robert McNamara on the decision to gradually escalate US military involvement in Vietnam (see). An ominous sign of things to come.
*December 1, 1964.
Postscript:
The Washington Times reminds us that in 1966 West Point was the site of an historic Vietnam speech given by Vice President Hubert Humphry (
see).
What it didn't say is that JFK, after sending 16,000 military advisors to Vietnam, was at West Point in early 1962 where he told cadets that "Vietnam was a new kind of war."
While politically there are no good options for Obama in Afghanistan there are no good outcomes for him either. Historians will see Afghanistan as one of Obama's many failures in domestic and foreign policy turning a disastrous leftwing presidency into a necessary catastrophe for undoing the secular progressive left and returning America back to sane principles, policies, practices and norms.
