At a fund-raiser in Seattle in 2008, vice presidential candidate Joe Biden gave this warning about Obama if the voters were to elect him president, "Mark my words. Mark my words. It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy," Biden then assured his audience that Obama had a "spine of steel" and would pass the test with flying colors.
Though Obama's been in office over two and half years without facing an international crisis it was interesting that Biden linked his warning to John Kennedy; for he gave it on October 19th, on the 46th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis*-which may have been a sign of things to come. For a report issued by the Middle East Media Research Institute (thanks Atlas Shrugs) says that sometime between now and Election Day Obama could be faced with a confrontational crisis in the Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico resembling the Cuban Missile Crisis, with Iran replacing the Soviet Union as the aggressor.

For it appears that Iran is planning "a deliberate provocation to the US mainland" by sending a fleet of warships, "armed with long range cruise missiles," across the Atlantic to their "destination off Cuba, in the Gulf of Mexico, and Central and South America." You can read the report (here). Why did Iran leak information about this operation? The report says that it's a warning to the US "if Israel were to strike against Iranian nuclear facilities." But I think it's something more. I think that it's a bargaining chip, leverage against the US led sanctions regime imposed on Iran as punishment for its illegal nuclear weapons program (see). I believe that the Iranians intentionally leaked the route map above to warn a weak US president seeking reelection that if economically damaging sanctions aren't lifted on their country he could be plunged into an unwanted foreign policy, defense and energy crisis. In other words, if Obama doesn't capitulate and play ball with Iran he could have a new Cuban Missile Crisis on his hands that could result in Ahmadinejad choking off oil shipments from the Gulf of Hormuz while endangering US ships and oil facilities off our shores. This would send oil prices through the roof adversely impacting our weak economy and, depending on how he handled it, further erode Obama's chances of reelection. Is the threat real? Are the mullahs bluffing? The White House isn't too concerned. But we shall see.
