No aid no exit? If the US suspends its annual $1.3 billion in aid to Egypt due to poor progress in democratic reforms will it continue to detain Sam LaHood (above) and other Americans?
Barack Obama's incipient hostage crisis with Islamist Egypt is in its sixth embarrassing day as the administration is meeting with a delegation of Egyptian defense officials to resolve it. At stake for Obama is a politically damaging Jimmy Carter Moment reminiscent of the 1979 hostage crisis with Iran if ransom isn't paid: $1.3 billion in badly needed US aid which Sam LaHood and his group were jeopardizing with their negative human rights reports to Congress. The $1.3 billion is the aid Egypt has received since making peace with Israel decades ago-which until the ousting of Mubarak last year was simply contingent on keeping peace with Israel. Since the revolution this aid has been made conditional by US lawmakers on progress in human rights and democratic reforms. As Egypt under the direction of the supremacist Moslem Brotherhood (Nazi allies during WWII) is being slowly transformed into an oppressive, anti-Western Islamic state subject to medieval Sharia Law continued peace with Israel and democratic reforms are in peril.
I say to hell with Egypt. Let it go Sharia and its people have their fill of totalitarian oppression, injustice and war until they grow sick of it and, like the people of Iran, want real Western-like democratic change. Progress toward modernity in the Middle East is a terrible rite of passage straight through burning hell. Unfortunately, it can't happen any other way.
