This top student of neuroscience exchanged a possible life of scientific discovery for the thrill of shedding innocent blood.
What was it that transformed this deranged young man from a gifted student of neuroscience with a rich and promising future ahead into a vicious mass murderer of innocent people facing life in prison or death by execution? Answer: a vacuum. For whatever reason James Holmes lost interest in his studies withdrew from school and filled the void with a fascination for mass murderers. He probably read voluminously on the subject and saw countless DVDs: Columbine, Oklahoma City, Virginia Tech, Ft. Hood, The World Trade Center. etc. He studied and read and thought and fantasized what it would be like to be a mass murderer shooting people, blowing up occupied buildings or destroying them with hijacked planes killing thousands. And as he tried to imagine the thrill of mass murder his fascination grew into a deadly obsession, and a belief that he had found his path and calling in life: to be a killing machine of innocents shedding rivers of blood. He would make his mark and become a legend from hell killing people by the dozens until he was captured or killed achieving his goal of universal infamy like the great ones he adored: Harris and Klebold, Timothy McVey, Seung-Hui Cho, Nidal Hasan, Mohammad Atta, and the rest. And then be he captured or killed he'd do something the others hadn't done: kill again when police searched his booby trapped home blown to bits by bombs like in some movie he saw. Century Theater was just the beginning. It was where the terrible legend would be born: the dark one rising from the pit of hell shocking the world with his crimes; the Joker killing for the sport of it creating mayhem, chaos and suffering sadistically enjoying what he'd done. Thank God he was caught and the legend cut short aborted in its infancy.
By the way, if the psychotic Mr. Holmes couldn't fulfill his deadly need to experience the thrill of massively killing people with guns he would have done so by blowing them to kingdom come as he was on his way to becoming an expert bomb maker. Along with all guns let's ban all bombs.
