ARIANNA HUFFINGTON AND THE ECONOMIC CAUSES OF RESISTENCE TO GUN CONTROL (SATIRE)

'We need the climate change of economic growth before Americans will be willing to disarm' infers Arianna Huffington.

Arianna Talks Gun Control

On Piers Morgan

What would today's debate on gun control be without input from the leftwing queen of blogging sagacity, media titan Arianna Huffington whose wisdom makes Athena look like stupid Pandora. In an interview with Piers Morgan (who likens America's millions of gun owners to the lawless frontier of the old Wild West) Arianna in explaining the difficulties of getting effective, life saving gun control legislation (meaning outlawing guns) in today's environment wisely put it this way:

"There is something that happens ... that when we are living in tough economic times that makes people irrational about security. And that's also what we are facing at the moment, I mean, there is a lot of fear in this country, and a lot of it is fear of the future, fear of unemployment. And in moments like that we often see that kind of desire to cling to something -- like guns -- as a way to guarantee some kind of safety in the future."

What an eye opener! Until now the economic causes of resistance to gun control completely eluded me. Unemployed and underemployed Americans oppose banning guns not because they believe in our Constitution of Freedom and the Second Amendment right to bear arms; not from a need for self-defense, recreational use or collecting them, but because Obama's economy sucks and from fear that it might get worse. If I'm following Arianna correctly gun owners irrationally believe that their pistols and assault weapons guarantee safety from the worsening effects of Obama's failed recovery and that if the economy should collapse into another recession they can blow it away in a hail of bullets. In bad times "Happiness is a warm gun," sang the Beatles. In recessions and depressions people cling foolishly to their arms as if they were good luck charms to fend off evil and offer hope of better days ahead. You want to keep your job despite Obama's ruinous policies? Buy a gun, bring it to work and let your boss see it. If he values his life he won't be firing you. Indeed, as Arianna wisely infers, in such dire times as these gun owning Americans are in no mood to see the light and disarm for the common good. Unless Obama makes good on his promise to give us a robustly growing economy gun owners will cling more fiercely to their weapons and buy more of them.

But things aren't as bad as they seem. Hope & Change are coming and coming soon. Now that Obama has restored Clinton's tax rates for the top 2% rich Clinton era prosperity should soon return creating the very same conditions of economic growth, job creation and optimism that abolished fear and insecurity from the country in the 90s; and allowed Senator Feinstein to pass her ban on assault weapons in Congress. Don't worry your pretty little head off Arianna: meaningful gun legislation is at hand and the gun will soon be banned now that Barack Obama's second term will be Bill Clinton's third.
